Black is back, or perhaps it never even left.
For 2022, BeautiTone has unveiled Ebony, a rich black with a subtle, spirited undertone of indigo, as its exterior colour of the year. It’s also the first time that BeautiTone, the Canadian-owned and Canadian-made paint — sold only at Home Hardware, Home Building Centre and Home Hardware Building Centre stores — has introduced an exterior colour of the year.
“Ebony is a bold choice,” said Darryl Allen, creative manager, BeautiTone Paint and Home Products, noting that Home Hardware stores have been getting a lot of requests for it recently. “We selected Ebony after researching our colour forecasting communities, watching trends in the wider design industry and listening to our customers. Dark exterior colours are not only trending, they are quickly becoming mainstream.”
With Ebony, BeautiTone said you have the opportunity to rethink colour and reimagine your outdoor space.
“Ebony can easily be used to complement natural wood, lush greenery and brightly landscaped yards,” said Allen. “It is ideal for use on new or previously stained surfaces when a colour change or an opaque finish is desired. This includes siding, fences, shutters, sheds, accent doors and trim both at the cottage and at home. It adds a great contemporary feel when used for planters and furniture, too.”
But it’s not just about fences, sheds and shutters.
“While we’re seeing a lot of new-build communities pop up with black in their palettes, owners of older homes are embracing it as well,” said Allen. “Whether updating with new windows and doors or repainting soffit and fascia, Ebony is an easy way to modernize an older style home. We’ve been seeing Tudor style homes replace brown for black, and Victorian and Craftsman style homes go full black, and the result is outstanding.”
Ebony also pairs well with cedar accents, according to BeautiTone. For example, incorporating Ebony in Modern Farmhouse homes adds a sleek, timeless flair to the exterior.
If you’re looking to start small, BeautiTone said Ebony is great for complementing planter boxes, privacy screens, deck boxes and benches. Bigger projects could include but are not limited to staining sheds, garage doors, siding and new home package builds.
“What customers really seem to like about Ebony is the way it brings a sense of calm and harmony to their space,” added Allen.
While BeautiTone notes that dark exterior colours are on-trend for 2022, black is also being called as timeless and always on trend regardless of the decade or for that matter, even the century.
“When you look back at the 18th century Japanese shou-sugi-ban method of preserving homes with fire or the Scandinavian technique of sealing wood with black pine tar, it is very much aligned with modern, contemporary style. It’s dramatic, grounding and easy to design with,” said Allen.
And as to introducing BeautiTone’s first exterior colour ever, Allen had this to say.
“Colour plays such a powerful role in our daily lives and is a central element of any home renovation project,” he said. “The importance of our outdoor spaces has really increased over the past couple of years, which means Canadians are spending more time outside and investing in their backyards and patios. Whether you’re enhancing curb appeal or looking for a budget-friendly way to update your backyard retreat, we feel now is the time to celebrate exterior colour.”
Ebony is part of BeautiTone’s Exterior Stain Colours card. The card features 36 solid and 36 semi-transparent colours available in BeautiTone’s Wood-Shield and Wood-Shield Best exterior stain lines.
